August Color Challenge Block - Yellow Orange

My creative mojo has not only left the building, it seems to have left the country.
I really want to be quilting and blogging and doing other crafty things, but as soon as I sit down to do it – WHEN I manage to block out a little time for it, I am just blank.  Even my skills are in the toilet. The tension on my machine is off just a teeny bit and I am scared to mess with it. Not to mention there is something wrong with my hands. (trigger finger maybe?)
Has anyone else ever been in a funk like this?  How do you break out of it? Do you work on projects that don’t require thinking?  Or do you just play without a goal in mind?
I am tempted to pull out yards of older fabric that no longer inspire me and just chop them all up into 5 ½” squares and 2 ½” strips and make a bunch of scrap car quilts just to rejuvenate my stash.  My amazing aunt calls them car quilts and I love the idea. It is a quilt that is just tossed in the back of your car when you go on a road trip or need a picnic blanket or whatever. It is usable in any situation.  Usually made of scraps and they are fun to give away. What are your favorite “no thinking” patterns for something like this? I was thinking maybe disappearing nine-patches or log cabins. Or just squares.
And on the other hand, as you know, I have been participating in the Monthly Color Challenge with Patterns by Jen.  She has some super fun and simple patterns each month that go with a specific color. Some of these would be just amazing if done all scrappy or repeated to make a full quilt.  Choices, choices, choices.
This month the color is Yellow-Orange (ok, my block leans more towards Red-Orange and I didn't realize until it was almost done and I loved it too much to undo it) and both are some of my favorite colors, but again -and this is becoming a trend isn’t it – I barely have any of that color in my stash.  Oh dear, that leads to wanting to buy more fabric. 😊
The pattern that Jen shared was fun to make (all of them are actually).

Make sure to check out the other bloggers on the hop and see some other renditions of this block and get some other free patterns too.

Once you make one of your own, you can link up to Jen’s Linky Party at the end of the month for a chance to win.  This month is sponsored by The Fat Quarter Shop.

  1. Hi Jen, First thing is don't worry about it. If you aren't feeling inspired right now and blogging and quilting feels like a chore, just don't do it. Do things that do capture your interest and the quilting mojo will come back when it's ready. I just went through the same thing and didn't write a blog post for about a month and barely sewed a thing! Then all of a sudden one day I just wanted to do it again. How's Montana????

  2. This block is beautiful! Especially love how that center fabric looks in the block. And I think your idea of cutting up some no longer liked fabric and making car quilts is a good idea. Easy and useful project to work on little by little, with no pressure, and could very well jump start your quilting mojo. AND make room for new fabric :)

  3. I have been in a similar funk. Start with a small project - a baby quilt or even wall hanging, so that you see fast results. The car quilt sounds perfect! Wonky log cabins so that you get a little character in the quilt but don't have to worry about precise seams and cutting. Have fun!

  4. Log cabins, disappearing 9 patch, and improv scrap blocks are my go to / no think blocks. The color challenge has been keeping me motivated , it has been a very busy year.

  5. You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this topic to be really something which I think I would never understand. It seems too complicated and extremely broad for me. I’m looking forward to your next post, I will try to get the hang of it!
