January Color Challenge Block

The first month of the 2018 Monthly Color Challenge is finally here!

January's color is RED!  Oh red.  Wonderful, wonderful Red.
Red is one of those colors that is always an accent for me.  I don't think I have hardly anything that is just red.  The red in my life consists of
*a pair of heels
Well darn.  I was going to make a cute clever list about how red is the perfect accent for almost any color combination, but the truth is, other than that pair of heels (which are brand new and have only been worn twice), I don't have a lot of red in my home.  There is a little maroon in my living room rug, but it could almost be a brown.  I think I have a red shirt somewhere too.

This lack of red extends to my fabric stash as well.  I had a heck of a time finding any red fabric for this month's block.  I did find some though.  And the block turned out lovely.

I tend to lean towards reds that are dark rather than bright.  I decided to make the smaller block for January and had some perfectly lovely fabrics to make this small block.

Don't mind the wonkiness of this block....It straightened out with another press.  :D

Make sure to check out the others that are posting about this month's color:

There will be a fun Link-up at the end of the month so you can see all the different Red blocks (either this one or others) and share your own.  The Link-up with Patterns By Jen will be up January 24-January 31 and a winner will be drawn on February 1.  The Winner will be getting this lovely prize from Northcott Fabrics:

Have fun making  your RED blocks!  I can't wait to see them all!
Happy Quilting!

2018 Monthly Color Challenge Blog Hop

2018 is coming up quick and I am so excited to be a part of the 2018 Monthly Color Challenge Blog Hop created by Jen at Patterns by Jen.

Here is how it is going to work (shared directly from Jen's post):

On the first of each month I will be posting a quilt block with instructions for a finished size of 12" or 6". The blocks are beginner friendly and will feature one color. The bloggers for that month will either be making that block, OR they will be sharing their own free pattern which may or may NOT be a quilt block.

Towards the end of the year I will share a few different layouts, so you can finish your quilt.

The challenge is to make something in that color for that month, either the block (either size or both) or something else. A link up party will open ONE week before the end of the month, here on the Patterns By Jen blog. When you have made your block or something else, link it up and on the 1st I will choose a winner. There are fabric bundles and gift certificates that will be given all year long!

Oh, did you not know there would be prizes??  :D
Yes-oh-Yes.  Lots of prizes.
Big shout out to all of our amazing Sponsors:

A super awesome Grand Prize:

Jen at Dizzy Quilter is providing the grand prize!

For every month you enter the link up, you get an entry for the grand prize.

The generous prize provided is you will get your top quilted by her (up to 90" x 90"),  a $202.50 value!

You must provide the backing, 8" longer than width and length. Batting can be purchased from Jen, for $20, if you like.

Return shipping is included for US residents only.
**Please note, the quilt will not be trimmed or bound, those services are extra**

Thanks to Jen for putting this whole thing together(and for letting me copy some of your text :))!  It is going to be so much fun!!

The Plan

There are still three weeks to go before 2018 and I am anxious to start on my sewing/quilting plan already.
We can't help but use January 1st as a day to re-evaluate and organize.  It is just part of our culture it seems.  Although in parts of my life I try to say "Just start today, why wait?", my 2018 quilting plan cannot be started too early.  Mostly because I still have stuff I need to do before Christmas.  *Cutting it just a little close here*
But also because a lot of my 2018 plan is based around monthly quilting.  I'll be joining Kelly at My Quilt Infatuation on her Classic Meets Modern Quilt A Long!

I fell in love with this quilt the minute I saw it and I was beyond excited when I learned she was doing a Block of the Month style Quilt A Long for it.  I am struggling with fabric choices for this one.  I am still trying my hardest to not buy any new fabric, or at least not fabric for an entire quilt.  I have a couple of choices, but nothing is screaming at me.  What do you guys think?
  • Pinks, Oranges, White - Think Cherry Blossoms and Spring time
  • Mixed prints in Gold, Teal, Plum, White
  • Black and White with one color tone-on-tone in it
  • Neutrals & Browns
  • Dark Purple & Charcoal greys with a little golden yellow
It is a tough decision for sure.  I need to be ready by January though because that is when the first block is made.  You should consider checking it out and joining us.  It is going to be an amazing quilt and lots of fun too!

Our Bee Inspired group has decided to continue on for another year and so I will have new blocks each month for that as well.  We had such a good time exchanging blocks.  We are all so easy going and forgiving that it makes it much less stressful than an intense Bee with lots and lots of people.  There are so few of us and I think we would consider each other friends, so we all have a really good time with it.

There are a few other things I will be doing in 2018, but I will have to cover those next time.  :D
Happy Quilting!
